Exploring sustainable omega-3 solutions

Exploring sustainable omega-3 solutions
While the health benefits of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids are increasingly recognised, the challenges posed by sourcing exclusively from fish are also on the radar, opening up opportunities for innovation. In fact, these long-chain omega-3s come to the fish themselves via algae, which has prompted great interest over years in how algal production could be optimised to deliver these beneficial health ingredients in a more sustainable way. Over the past five years, Vaxa has worked to take advantage of power from the Hellisheidi Power Station in Iceland to power a unique, closed-loop, controlled aquaculture facility. The indoor growth platform uses machine learning technology for controlled, scaleable, fresh microalgae production. This summer, Vaxa launched a consumer products division—Örlo Nutrition; the name is derived from a unique combination of Icelandic words: Örlog meaning ‘fate’ (fortune, destiny) and Ör derived from ‘micro.’ In this podcast, Corrina Bellizzi shares more about Vaxa’s journey, the sustainability story, and the potential for growth in this market.Tune in to hear more about: Why the global omega-3 market is ripe for change, and the potential positives on the climate. How companies can assess their full lifecycle impact to determine their sustainability footprint.Inspirational concepts around the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and opportunities for firms to align their business strategy for a net positive result.Consumer engagement strategies and the broad appeal of omega-3s to all ages.Guest: Corrina Bellizzi, head of sales & marketing, Örlo NutritionClick here to listen to our other Sustainability Series podcast episodes. If you like the show, make sure to subscribe and follow the Vitafoods Insights podcast. Accelerating the upcycling journey with Alvinesa

Accelerating the upcycling journey with Alvinesa
Upcycling is a new term highlighting the ability to make the most of surplus food waste; Alvinesa has been on this path for decades, and is accelerating its efforts.Upcycling allows firms to make the most of surplus waste, such as food waste, to incrementally add value to the supply chain. While it’s not a new concept, the term itself has taken on greater resonance in recent years as companies seek to make the most of every part of their base ingredients. From a family-owned company founded in 1948 to ‘upcycle’ spent waste of the wine making process, Alvinesa has developed into a firm devoted to exploring how to develop high value nutraceutical ingredients. In partnership with its new investors Intermedial Capital Group, and with new CEO Jordi Ferre on board, Alvinesa is extending its geographic and market reach. In this podcast, Ferre speaks to the opportunities around upcycling and the circular economy, the importance of increasing geographic reach, and how companies can extend their own journeys around sustainability.Tune in to hear more about:The concept of upcycling and opportunities to make the most of agro-waste.How using natural extraction processes can optimize ingredient positioning.Increased acquisition and geo-extension plans for Alvinesa.Inspiration for greater sustainability creativity.Guest: Jordi Ferre, CEO, Alvinesa Natural IngredientsIf you like the show, make sure to subscribe and follow the Vitafoods Insights podcast. Feel free also to recommend the show to a friend that you think would enjoy it.For more content from Vitafoods Insights, make sure to check our website:  https://www.vitafoodsinsights.com    To learn more about sponsorships opportunities, click here and make sure to check our media kit.
